What is the Advantage of Homeschooling?

So what is the advantage of homeschooling? There are many homeschooling advantages, and for each family, different advantages will be deemed more important than others. One main advantage of homeschooling is that you can determine what and how your child is taught. You know your children best and are the best qualified to determine what will be important for them to experience and understand, to best utilize their God-given talents and realize their potential.

But here are some of the most important benefits to homeschooling, particularly for those who want to celebrate the uniqueness of each of their children and create a foundation for their later financial independence.

Enhances Critical and Creative Thinking

In one series of IQ tests given to children ages 2-4 years old, 95% of the children were found to be highly creative - questioning minds and an ability for abstract thinking. When the same children were tested again at age 7, only 5% still demonstrated high levels of creativity. In the ensuing years they learned to conform, "If you want to get along, you had better go along" is what they discovered. They had learned to color between the lines, to sit in neat little rows, to do and say what the other kids did and said, and to do as they were told. Over time, they lost the wonderful fearless spontaneity of youth and learned to suppress ideas and ideas that were unusual or different. We have the homeschool advantages of retaining and encouraging that creativity.

Learning Style and Pace to Fit the Child

Another advantage of homeschooling is that your child can learn at the pace that is right for him or her, and can achieve a complete understanding before moving on. If they understand a concept easily, they don't have to wait until the rest of the class "gets" it. You are also more able to adapt to the learning styles of your children. If you have a kinetic learner, he can even learn math facts while bouncing on a mini trampoline!

Ability to Instill YOUR Family Values

School districts can expose your children to beliefs that go against your family beliefs. When educating our children at home, we are able to teach our children about what happens in our world today after they have a foundation of understanding and have the maturity to understand.

Time to Pursue Interests & Talents

We have the advantage of homeschooling in that we can cover the same concepts and skills in so much less time than in public school. First of all so much of the day is wasted in public school: bus trip, moving from class to class, getting ready to leave, etc. Also, we are teaching in the best way for our children's need so they are able to learn more quickly. Even if you have a large family, your children are still getting much more individualized attention than in a classroom of 25 or more students.

This gives our children more time to pursue their interests, talents and learn important life skills. After getting the 'basics' done for the day children can practice musical instruments, play sports, get involved in community service and start up entrepreneurial ventures.

The Financial and Lifestyle Benefits of Entrepreneurial Ventures

Another advantage of homeschooling is that your children will gain insights and develop skills that have real life application they would never learn in public school. Public schools are designed to create workers not entrepreneurs or creative thinkers. Children do not get a financial education in public school or learn how to work for themselves.

All my children, but particularly my oldest, have learned so much from my home business. My son knows he wants to work for himself and already has a greater understanding of finances, and good financial principles, better than people much older. Home Educators and authors, such as Christine Field and Raymond Moore, have discussed the benefits of homeschooling and having a home business for the excellent education and life learning it provides our children. It makes good educational and financial sense, and gives our children the homeschooling advantage.
